When traveling down to the beautiful beaches of the Emerald Coast, there are a few essentials needed to ensure a successful day on our white sandy beaches. Before you and your family leave your Oceanside Beach Rental’s vacation rental and feel the white sands between your toes – be sure to make a checklist of these beach items:
1) You must pack a towel or two. To have a great day laying out, bring a big beach towel or sheet, plus a few extra towels (no one likes being sandy all day). A good tip is to level out the area you are going to lay on before dropping the towels, and remember to “tuck-in” each corner to keep your layout area in place.
2) A good cooler with plenty of water and some sandwiches for a quick meal is a great idea because the sun’s rays will have you dehydrated rather quickly. Also toss a few different levels of sunscreen/lotion, chapstick, and aloe-vera in the cooler as well, you will be glad you did.
3) Beach chairs and big shade umbrellas are a great addition if you plan an all day adventure, but most beaches along the coast offer the luxury of nice lounge beach chair rentals for you (a God-send if you have children or want to relax for more than a few hours). We also offer a complimentary beach chair setup from The Beach Chair Company for most of our vacation rentals from March 1 through October 31.
4) No great beach day is complete without a means of entertainment. If you have children, this means shovels, buckets, and boogie-boards. If you are an adult, this probably means a book, music, and friends.
While it is generally best to go out on an extra sunny and clear day, don’t discount a somewhat cloudy day as a bad beach day that you can’t get any sun on. These are the days that catch most people off guard and create the worst sunburns. On cloudy beach days, remember to cover up with suntan lotion and reapply every few hours – again, you will be glad you did.
Our beaches are better. A common mistake when visiting the beaches of Destin, Santa Rosa Beach, Panama City Beach, and Pensacola Beach is to stay out on the beach too long, trying to get a “good” tan. Very different from a tanning bed and your local river, the sands we have on the beach are nearly white and very reflective, making our beaches much more effective for tanning. Unless you are very dark skinned, limit your time at the beach to just a couple hours your first day – again, you will be glad you did.
Choose the right beach area. To properly evaluate what type of beach experience you want to have, the ideal way to scope out your “favorite” beach area is to drive by and look at it yourself. If you have children and want a relaxed and quiet day, choosing a popular beach near a beach-bar is probably not the best choice. If you are coming to Florida and wanting to let loose with your close friends and enjoy being around people, there are many famous beach bars in our area.
Prepare before you get out in the sun. Before you embark out in the sun, be sure to put on sunscreen at least 15 minutes beforehand. If you have sensitive skin or you want to protect your face, stop by one of our many surf shops and grab some hi-quality facial sun-block.
