May — the best month, full stop
May is the single best month to visit 30A. The water is warming — typically in the high 70s by mid-May. Spring break crowds from Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee have gone home. Summer crowds have not arrived. The beaches are peaceful. Restaurant reservations are easy. Prices are meaningfully lower than July. And the weather — warm days, often breezy, long evenings — is about as good as Gulf Coast weather gets.
October — a close second
October stays in the upper 70s to low 80s for the first two weeks, the crowds have thinned significantly after Labor Day, and the three major fall wine festivals (Seeing Red in Seaside, Harvest Wine in WaterColor, Rosemary Beach Uncorked) give you more to do in a single week than any other month. October is exceptional if you appreciate food, wine, and an uncrowded beach.
The months to avoid if you want quiet
Late June, July, and early August are peak season — the beaches are active, restaurants are full, and prices are at their highest. If your schedule forces summer, it is still a wonderful vacation — just go in with realistic expectations about crowds and cost.
Winter is underrated
January and February are quiet in a way that is genuinely special. The Songwriters Festival on MLK weekend in January is worth a trip on its own — 125 artists, 30 venues, four days. Outside of that weekend, winter guests often have the beach essentially to themselves.
