Eastern Lake is a three-minute walk from our back door. After seventeen years I still think it is the most underrated thing on 30A — and most visitors never walk over to see it.
One of only five places on Earth
Coastal dune lakes are bodies of freshwater that form behind coastal dunes, separated from the ocean by only a narrow berm of sand. When water levels rise high enough — usually after sustained rain — the lake breaches that berm and drains directly into the Gulf. Saltwater pushes back in. The two mix. Then the sand rebuilds and the lake seals itself off again until the next time.
This happens in only five places on the planet: New Zealand, Australia, Madagascar, the Oregon coast, and right here in South Walton County. There are 15 named coastal dune lakes along the 30A corridor — the highest concentration anywhere in the United States. Eastern Lake is one of them.
The outfall — worth watching for
When a dune lake outfalls, tannin-stained brown freshwater cuts a channel across the white sand and pours into the emerald Gulf. The color contrast is dramatic enough that people stop walking to look at it. It cannot be scheduled or predicted — it happens when the water level and the sand berm reach the right relationship, sometimes after a storm, sometimes without obvious cause.
The channel shifts location each time, which means the beach near the outfall point looks physically different from one visit to the next. If you are on the beach and see brown water running to the Gulf, that is what you are watching. Walk over. It does not last long.
What lives there
The brackish chemistry creates habitat that neither pure freshwater nor pure saltwater systems support. Great blue herons work the shallows. Ospreys hunt overhead. Egrets stalk the marshy edges. Alligators are present in some of the lakes — not aggressive, not a swimming hazard in the areas people use, but real and worth respecting. Largemouth bass, bream, and mullet live in the lake year-round, and redfish occasionally enter during outfall events.
How to actually use Eastern Lake
Kayaking and paddleboarding are the obvious answers. The water is calm and shallow — dramatically easier for children than the Gulf on any day with surf. Rentals are available nearby and several operators deliver. Fishing from a kayak on the lake is genuinely productive and requires only a freshwater license.
For guests staying with us, the public access point is a short walk. Most people spend their entire week on the beach and never go. The ones who do usually come back saying it was the part of the trip they did not expect.
The other dune lakes worth seeing
- Western Lake — behind WaterColor, the largest and most photographed. Kayak rentals at the WaterColor launch.
- Draper Lake — quieter, near Blue Mountain Beach.
- Campbell Lake — inside Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, the most protected of the group.
- Stallworth Lake — small, near Miramar Beach.
- Deer Lake — inside Deer Lake State Park, with a boardwalk over the dunes that is worth the drive on its own.
