Surf fishing from the beach
The Gulf in front of Leeward Unit 2 holds fish year-round. Pompano, whiting, and redfish are the most common catches from the surf in this area. Early morning and late afternoon are the most productive windows — the light is better, the water is calmer, and the bait fish are active. A simple bottom rig with fresh shrimp or sand fleas handles most surf fishing situations here. Florida requires a saltwater fishing license for anyone 16 and older — purchase one through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website before you arrive.
Lake fishing — Eastern Lake and the dune lakes
