October is my second-favorite month on 30A. Here is why — and what to actually expect when you get there.
Air temperature — excellent
October air temperatures on 30A typically run in the low-to-mid 80s during the day and drop into the 60s overnight. The humidity drops significantly compared to summer. Long sleeves become appropriate in the evenings. It is genuinely comfortable in a way that July is not — you can walk to Seaside, bike 30A, and sit outside for dinner without the heavy heat of summer.
Water temperature — usually still warm
Early October typically sees Gulf water in the upper 70s to low 80s — warm enough for comfortable swimming. Most guests swim in early October without any hesitation. The transition happens in mid-to-late October, when the water cools more noticeably. By Halloween it can range from still-pleasant to too-cold depending on the year and whether any cold fronts have come through.
The wine festivals
October on 30A is wine festival season. The Seeing Red Wine Festival in Seaside is walking distance from Leeward Unit 2. The Harvest Wine and Food Festival runs in WaterColor. Rosemary Beach Uncorked happens in November but draws the same crowd. If you enjoy wine and food events, October gives you more to do in a single week than any other month of the year on 30A.
Crowds
Summer crowds are gone. The beaches are noticeably emptier than July or August. Restaurant reservations are easier to get. The highway is quieter. You get the same world-class beach with a fraction of the summer traffic. This alone makes October worth considering for anyone with schedule flexibility.
