On 30A — walking distance and nearby
Old Florida Fish House in Seagrove is the most convenient option from our condo — short walk, good atmosphere, reliable seafood in a casual setting. Local Catch and Paradise Grill are both worth visits. For a more elevated dinner, Café Thirty-A has been consistently outstanding for years — one of the best restaurants in the United States, not just on 30A.
For special occasions — Bud and Alley’s
Bud and Alley’s in Seaside (a 15-minute walk or 5-minute bike ride) is another excellent option for a special dinner. Rooftop bar, good wine list, consistent quality. Make a reservation in peak season.
Destin — worth the 30-minute drive
Destin has some of the best seafood in the region. Harbor Docks is the local favorite — long-standing, consistently fresh, not flashy but reliably excellent. Marina Cafe is more upscale with a harbor view. Captain Anderson’s is iconic and worth experiencing at least once. If you want fresh dockside seafood, make the drive — it is worth it.
A practical tip
Buddy’s Seafood Market near Seagrove sells fresh Gulf catch to cook yourself. This is how locals often eat the freshest fish — buy it the same day it came off the boat, grill it on the on-site grill, eat it on the beach. Cheaper, fresher, and honestly more satisfying than most restaurant options.

What is actually in season
Ordering well means knowing what came off a boat recently rather than out of a freezer. Gulf seasons run roughly like this:
- Red snapper — short federal season, usually early summer. When it is on a menu in season, order it.
- Grouper — available most of the year. Black grouper and red grouper both excellent.
- Amberjack — spring and fall. Firm, meaty, good grilled.
- Cobia — spring migration, March through May. A local event when the run is on.
- Triggerfish — limited season, worth ordering when available. Sweet and underrated.
- Gulf shrimp — year-round and genuinely different from farmed imports.
- Oysters — Apalachicola oysters when available, though the fishery has struggled.
How to order it
Grilled or blackened over fried, almost always. The fish here is good enough that breading it is a waste. If a restaurant offers a fish of the day and can tell you the boat it came in on, order that regardless of what you planned to get.
Ask whether the snapper is Gulf red snapper or imported. The difference is substantial and the price difference on the menu often is not.
The Buddy’s method
The best seafood meal you will have on 30A probably will not be in a restaurant. Walk to Buddy’s Seafood Market, buy whatever came in that morning, and grill it on the on-site grill at the condo. Fresh grouper with salt, olive oil, and a lemon, thirty feet from the Gulf it came out of, costs a fraction of a restaurant entrée and is better.
This is how the people who live here eat. Do it at least once during your stay.
Worth the drive to Destin
Harbor Docks is the one I recommend without hesitation — long-standing, unpretentious, and they run their own seafood distribution operation which means the sourcing is genuinely better than most. Marina Cafe is the upscale option with a harbor view. Both are about 30 minutes from Seagrove and worth an evening.
